Marian ACHA D3 earns first win in split with D2 Saint Mary’s (Minn.)

Marian University ACHA D3 hockey (1-3-0, 0-2-0 MACHA) earned its first victory in a split with ACHA D2 opponent Saint Mary’s (Minn.).

GAME 1 (AWAY, L, 8-2)

  • Marian traded goals with the Cardinals to open the series with Roenick Vosburg lighting the lamp for the Sabres.
  • SMU was able to then score the next seven goals to lead 8-1.
  • Despite the deficit, the Sabres were able to build momentum going into game two when Samson Hamburg scored in the final minute.

GAME 2 (HOME, W, 5-3)

  • The Sabres came out strong in their return to Blue Line with Karl Werner and Vosburg putting Marian ahead 2-0 after the first period.
  • The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second period before Bennett Luke extended the Sabre lead to 3-1.
  • The final goal of the second saw the Marian lead trimmed to 3-2 going into the final period.
  • Saint Mary’s managed to tie the game to open the third period, but Werner put Marian back ahead 4-3 scoring a power-play goal with 1:38 left in the game.
  • Another power-play goal, this time from Tyler Queen, put the game away for the Sabres.

GAME 1

  • Marian was held to single-digit shots in each period finishing with a 53-26 deficit.

GAME 2

  • The Sabres were outshot 68-34 but had double-digit shots in the final two periods.
  • Marian had a strong game on special teams going 2-for-6 on the power play, while the penalty kill didn’t allow a goal on eight chances.
  • The Sabres are now 3-2-0 all-time against Saint Mary’s (Minn.).
