Marian ACHA D2 Splits Season-opening Series

Marian University ACHA D2 (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHL) was defeated 6-3 at home to open the season but salvaged a split against Purdue Northwest with a 6-3 road victory.

GAME 1 (L, 6-3, HOME)

  • Marian opened strong but was unable to find the back of the net.
  • Purdue Northwest was able to take advantage scoring twice, once on a power play, to take a 2-0 lead after the first period.
  • The Pride controlled the second period and was able to add to its lead with another pair of goals.
  • Marian didn’t go away quietly as Simon Ellingson opened the scoring for the third period just 11 seconds in.
  • A power-play goal from Gavyn Galloway cut the Marian deficit to just two at the 3:21 mark.
  • Purdue Northwest would put the game away scoring two of the final three goals with Cayden Frenette lighting the lamp for Marina.

GAME 2 (W, 6-3, ROAD)

  • The script was reversed on the road as Marian scored twice in the opening period of game two to take an early lead.
  • Ellingson and Galloway each netted their second goals of the series with Galloway scoring a short-handed goal.
  • A serge Simard goal 1:34 into the second period saw Marian build its lead to 3-0.
  • That advantage was cut to one going into the third period after th Pride scored twice.
  • The Sabres were able to build some breathing room to open the third period as Jackson Sweeney netted a power-play goal and Justin Doucette netted his first collegiate goal.
  • Purdue Northwest put together one final push cutting their deficit to 5-3, but Chris Regan put the game away scoring with just 1:45 to play.

GAME 1

  • Marian outshot Purdue Northwest 12-10 in the opening period but the Pride had a 36-28 edge for the game.
  • The Sabres were 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Pride went 2-for-6.

GAME 2

  • The Sabres outshot the Pride 11-10 in the first period of game two, but Purdue Northwest once again held an edge for the game by a 43-28 margin.
  • Marian finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Sabre penalty kill allowed one goal on five chances.
  • Marian is now 4-2-0 all-time against Purdue Northwest and is undefeated on the road in three games.

Simon Ellingson had a goal in each game to go with an assist.
Tyler McArthur (1-1-0) earned the victory in game two after making 40 saves.
