Marian ACHA D2 dominates CUW to reclaim Mequondulac Cup

Marian University ACHA D2 (11-2-0, 8-0-0 NCHL) earned wins of 4-2 and 6-1 against CUW to reclaim the Mequondulac Cup and stay perfect in NCHL play.

GAME 1 (AWAY, W, 4-2)

  • The Sabres were able to get out to a strong start behind goals from Cayden Frenette and Devon Butler to lead 2-0.
  • The Falcons were able to cut that deficit in half scoring with just 1:17 left in the opening period.
  • CUW was then able to tie the game at the 7:51 mark of the second period with a short-handed score.
  • Simon Ellingson would give Marian th lead for good scoring at the 11:14 mark of the period.
  • There were plenty of opportunities for both sides in the final period but an empty-net goal from Frenette sealed the win.

GAME 2 (HOME, W, 6-1)

  • The opening period of game two saw the defenses shine as neither side had many chances through the first 20 minutes.
  • Marian would light the lamp first with a short-handed goal from Serge Simard 3:10 into the second period.
  • There would be three goals in a span of 4:48 with Easton Nick opening the stretch.
  • After a CUW goal, Simard netted his second of the period with just 1:53 left in the stanza to give Marian a 3-1 lead headed into the third.
  • Marian was able to put the game away scoring three times in a span of 3:58 in the third period.
  • Gavyn Galloway started the push for the Sabres before Frenette put the game away with back-to-back goals, one being on a power play.

GAME 1

  • Marian had at least 14 shots in each period and finished with a 46-32 advantage for the game. 
  • The Sabres went 1-for-6 on the power play and the penalty kill didn’t allow a goal on two CUW chances.

GAME 2

  • Marian finished with a narrow 29-28 edge for shots in the game with 11 coming in the final period.
  • The Sabre power play managed just one goal on seven chances, but the penalty kill shined again with another perfect night on four chances, including 1:56 of 5-of-3.
  • The Sabres are now 18-4-0 all-time against CUW with this being the first sweep since the 2021-22 season.

Cayden Frenette had multiple goals in each game and finished the weekend with six points.
Tyler McArthur earned the win in goal both nights making 57 saves on the weekend with a .950 save percentage.
Serge Simard had a four-point game in the second game with two goals and two assists.
