Legacy Express, LLC was started in 2011 by Jeff O’Brien and the late Brandon Gerwin. These two entrepreneurs worked for Mercury Marine and followed their passion for the transportation industry as they launched their company with two trucks and one customer.
Today, the company is solely owned by Jeff O’Brien. Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Marian University and an Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology from Moraine Park Technical College.
In its current business model, the company focuses on local freight trucking services (300 miles or less) with offerings in dry van, refrigerated, and flatbed transportation to Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan.
Business growth has necessitated the business expand into three separate entities: Legacy Express, Legacy Warehousing and Legacy Truck and Repair. The complete operation has grown to 53 tractors and 100 trailers while employing 65 people.
In Spring 2019, Legacy Express completed a parking lot expansion. In addition to lot enhancements, additional electrical service and lighting was added. This expansion will accommodate future business growth providing space for the fleet to double in size. In addition to trucking, the warehousing division is also experiencing rapid growth via new relationships with regional companies.
With many area businesses feeling the effects of the workforce shortage, Legacy Express has taken an “employee first” approach to attract and retain employees. The company strives to match drivers with routes that best match the schedule of their personal lives. This matching system has resulted in employees feeling valued and appreciated by the company, ultimately lowering turnover rates and providing a healthy supply of applicants for open positions.
As Legacy looks to the future, the increased business and recent expansion will allow for an additional 70 employees over the next three years (2019-2021) that will consist of drivers, warehouse employees and support staff.
