Late rally falls short for Sabre women’s lacrosse at Cornell

Marian University women’s lacrosse (3-6, 0-1 NACC) dropped its NACC opener falling to Cornell 16-7.

  • Senior Izzy Newton was able to open the scoring just 1:36 in with an assist from freshman Chloe Yanez.
  • The Rams responded just 33 seconds later in what was a defensive opening stanza.
  • Cornell was able to take its first lead 22 seconds into the second quarter and ended up ahead 4-1.
  • Yanez netted a woman-down goal to put Marian behind just two with 6:56 on the clock, but the Rams scored twice more to lead 6-2 at halftime.
  • The third quarter was dominated by Cornell as the Rams scored the first seven goals of the quarter to lead 13-2.
  • Sophomore Cielo Martinez was able to give Marian momentum scoring with just 31 seconds left before the fourth quarter.
  • The Rams netted the opening goal of the final quarter, but Marian scored four unanswered to trail 14-7.
  • The Sabres had four different scorers during the stretch.
  • The Rams were able to put the game away with two goals in the final 1:21 with the final standing at 16-7.
