Late push falls short for Sabre men’s soccer

Marian University men’s soccer (3-7-1, 1-6-1 NACC) was defeated by Dominican 3-1 heading into a three-match road trip.

  • The Stars were able to get things going quickly scoring just 5:25 in to open the scoring.
  • Then at 19:45 Dominican was able to extend its lead with a similar centering-pass goal.
  • This 2-0 lead held for the Stars going into halftime.
  • Dominican took a 3-0 lead with a strike from the top of the box in the 59th minute.
  • Shortly after, senior Zach Paxton was able to dribble to the top of the box and let one rip that found the back of the net through the upper right portion of the goal, his first score of the season, at the 65:40 mark.
  • This helped Marian build momentum offensively and the Sabres were able to control play the remainder of the game.
  • The Sabres wouldn’t be able to come any closer, however, leading to the 3-1 final.

  • Shots were fairly even with Dominican holding an 11-9 edge and 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Each team had three corner kicks and three saves in the match.
  • It was a physical game with Marian receiving four yellow cards to only one for Dominican.
  • Marian also had 12 fouls to only five for the Stars.
  • The Dominican victory snaps a two-game winning streak for the Sabres.

Freshman Gijs Koopmans made three saves and allowed just one goal in 56:23 of action.
Senior Giuliano Corazzina had a match-high three shots, two of which were on goal.
