Late lead eludes Marian softball against Benedictine

Marian University softball (14-16, 11-7 NACC) led 4-2 in the seventh inning of game two but ultimately fell 5-4 in eight innings after dropping game one 3-0 to Benedictine.

GAME 1 

  • Marian’s lone error set up Benedictine’s run on a passed ball in the first. 
  • The Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 with a run in the second. 
  • Benedictine’s Haley Barnes scored in the third for the game’s final run. 
  • A throw from sophomore Aubrey Bender to senior Alexa Paulsberg threw out the runner at home, preventing a fourth run. 
  • Held without a hit over the finathreatenedinnings, the Sabres dropped game one 3-0. 

GAME 2 

  • A three-hit first inning helped Marian jump out quickly, with sophomore Macey Pease doubling and scoring on a junior Mackenzie Christofferson hit. 
  • Marian’s momentum carried into the second, scoring three runs, including two on a Pease single, to lead 4-1. 
  • The Sabres held the lead into the fifth, when a wild pitch brought the Eagles within two. 
  • Benedictine threatened in the sixth, but a bases-loaded pop out ended the scoring chance. 
  • Pease doubled for the second time in the seventh, but the Sabres couldn’t turn it into runs. 
  • Four hits and two runs in the seventh helped Benedictine force extra innings. 
  • The Eagles completed the comeback with a walk-off single up the middle from Lauren Bogard after a hitless inning by the Sabres.

  • The Sabres were outhit 8-2, matching their season-low in hits.
  • Marian committed one miscue in the first, resulting in a run.
  • Four Eagles recorded stolen bases in the contest. 
  • Mckenzie Johnson struck out nine while pitching a complete game for Benedictine. 

GAME 2

  • The Sabres had a season-high 22 putouts. 
  • Pease notched her first two-double effort as a Sabre. 
  • Each team finished with double-digit hits, with Benedictine holding a 13-10 edge. 
  • The Eagles continued their aggressive baserunning, stealing three bases in the game. 
  • Benedictine leads the all-time series against Marian, 27-14, and has won straight against the Sabres.

Sophomore Macey Pease went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored in game two. 
Senior Hope Matta tallied a hit in each game and added a run, RBI, and stolen base in game two. 
Senior Riley Mankowski added a double and scored a run in game two.
