JANUARY IS RADON ACTION MONTH

Take Action. Test for Radon.

During National Radon Action Month in January, the Fond Du Lac County Health Departments encourages homeowners to take action and test their home for radon. Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in smokers. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas responsible for an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The colorless, odorless, tasteless gas can enter homes through cracks in the foundation or other openings. The Department of Health Services estimates that 1 out of 10 homes in Wisconsin have high radon levels. The EPA recommends taking action when the level of radon in a home is 4 or more picocuries per liter of air.

There is no way to predict the level of radon in your home. Testing for radon in your home is simple, inexpensive and the best way to protect yourself and family from radon. Radon levels in a home can change so it is also important to retest your home every two years. Mitigation systems can be installed to reduce radon levels.
During the month of January, the short-term radon test kits will be available for $5.00 at the Fond du Lac County Health Department located at 160 S. Macy St., Fond du Lac, WI 54935; Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Kits may also be available at your local city/town clerk. Short-term radon test kits are available year-round for $10.
