High-scoring affair ends in Marian men’s basketball loss to CUW

Five Sabres scored in double figures, but Marian University men’s basketball (14-10, 10-7 NACC) gave up 54 points in the second half in a 90-80 loss at Concordia Wisconsin.

  • The duo of Logan Landers and Luke Eggemeyer combined for 16 points in the first seven minutes, yet Marian remained within striking distance.
  • A layup from freshman Max Breitenbach started an 11-2 run, putting the Sabres ahead 26-18 with 7:55 left in the first half.
  • As the Falcons regained momentum, seniors Alex Vassilakis and Derek Lindert hit three-pointers to keep Marian in control.
  • A 12-2 CUW run in the final 4:30 gave the Falcons a brief lead, but Vassilakis’ buzzer-beating three-pointer put Marian ahead 37-36 at halftime.
  • Vassilakis led the way with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting three-point shooting, while Lindert added 10 points in the half.
  • Freshman Marvin Haslett came out strong, scoring the first five Marian points, including an and-one layup.
  • A layup and-one from junior Andrew Ayeni broke a three-minute scoring drought for the Sabres, keeping them ahead 48-43.
  • Concordia Wisconsin’s Casey Verhagen scored eight of the next ten Falcon points to cut the Marian lead to two. 
  • With 7:54 remaining, Landers’ layup gave the Falcons a 64-63 lead, their first of the second half.  
  • The Sabres made 13 straight free throws to start the second half and finished 17-of-20 (.850) after halftime. 
  • Despite success from the line, the Sabres went over six minutes without a field goal until Vassilakis’ and-one brought them within five with 2:45 to play.
  • The Falcons led by double figures with 33 seconds left, then sealed the win at the line, locking up home-court advantage for next Tuesday.

  • Scoring 17 points, Marvin Haslett set a new Marian freshman scoring record, eclipsing Jerid Holewinski’s 288 from 2006-07.
  • With an 11-of-11 performance from the line, Haslett recorded the most free throws in a game by a Sabre since Tyler Gouin’s 15 on Feb. 21, 2023.
  • The Falcons dominated inside, outscoring the Sabres 44-24 in the paint. 
  • Logan Landers, the NACC’s top scorer and rebounder, posted 35 points and 13 rebounds, including 14-of-17 from the line.
  • The Sabres and Falcons met for the 82nd time, with Concordia Wisconsin leading the all-time series, 49-33. 
  • The loss was the Sabres’ fifth-straight to the Falcons, with their last win dating back to Dec. 17, 2022.
