Overseeing Financial Operations and Strategy for the Health Care System
Froedtert ThedaCare leaders are announcing Harold Berfiend, MBA, as the chief financial officer for the health care system.
In this role, Berfiend will oversee all financial operations for the system, including financial strategy, budgeting, revenue cycle and long-term financial planning. Through financial strength and sustainability, he will lead teams that support the organization’s ability to continue providing comprehensive care and expanding access across the state of Wisconsin and beyond.

Andrabi, MD, FAAFM, president and CEO Froedtert ThedaCare. “His expertise and strategic perspective will be instrumental as we continue to invest in our people, expand access to care and strengthen the communities we serve.”

Berfiend will oversee several teams in his new role including, Finance, Facilities, Revenue Cycle, Supply Chain and Managed Care.

Harold comes from a health system where he worked across a diverse care environment that included both academic medicine and deeply rooted community-based health. Prior to joining Froedtert ThedaCare, Berfiend held several leadership roles within the Indiana University Health system, including corporate controller, chief operating officer of IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and vice president of strategic integration. Most recently, he was the vice president and controller for the statewide system. He earned his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting, and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology, both from Cameron University.
As Berfiend steps into the new role, Mark Thompson, MBA, CPA, chief transformational investments and value integration officer for Froedtert ThedaCare, who has also been serving as interim chief financial officer, will be retiring on July 3, 2026.
Thompson has played a pivotal role in strengthening the organization’s financial foundation, ensuring Froedtert ThedaCare remains resilient and well-positioned to invest in high-quality patient care, innovation and our people.
Berfiend will officially begin in his new role at Froedtert ThedaCare on May 11, 2026.
