Gordillo lifts Marian women’s soccer to season-opening win

Marian University women’s soccer (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NACC) used a 78th-minute goal from junior Emily Gordillo to defeat Augustana (Ill.) 1-0 in its first game of the season.

  • Augustana (Ill.) had the first shot of the game but Marian controlled play for the majority of the opening half.  
  • Despite this, the Vikings were able to keep Marian off the scoreboard and the game knotted at 0-0 at halftime.
  • The second half saw similar play where Marian managed to maintain possession.
  • The Sabres would make three substitutions in the 75th minute before Gordillo tucked a shot inside the upper corner at the 77:27 mark to open the scoring.
  • Marian was able to hold the Vikings to only one shot the rest of the way in a season-opening win.

  • Marian finished with a 15-5 edge in shots and 8-3 advantage for shots on goal.
  • The Sabres also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Marian committed 12 fouls to 5 for Augustana (Ill.) with each squad being booked for one yellow card.
  • This is the first victory in the season opener for the Sabres since 2019, a 4-0 win over Beloit at the Fond du Lac Soccer Complex.
  • Marian is now 1-1 all-time against the Vikings with this being the first meeting since 2014 and at Smith Field.

Freshman Samantha Smith (1-0-0) stopped all three shots she faced to earn a win in her first collegiate game.
Junior Sophia Romo had a game-high four shots.
