Fortner multi-goal game spoiled by Middlebury

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey (4-3-0, 1-1-1-1 NCHA) was defeated by host Middleubry 6-2 in the opening game of the LayerEight Shootout.

  • A quick start for the Sabres saw Marian score 3:27 in with senior Daunte Fortner lighting the lamp with assists from fellow senior Jaymes Knee and junior Luca Marcellitti.
  • This 1-0 lead for Marian held going into the first intermission.
  • The Panthers needed just 1:13 of play in the second period and took its first lead with a power-play goal at the 8:20 mark.
  • Middlebury had a strong finish to the period with three goals in a span of 2:11 to head into the third period with a 5-1 lead.
  • Fortner found the back of the net 1:30 into the final period with assists from Knee and freshman Brendan Bottem to give Marian a spark.
  • An empty-net goal from the Panthers with 30 seconds to play would seal the game, however.

  • Marian opened the game with a 15-4 advantage in shots and finished with a 33-22 edge for the game.
  • Each team had five penalties with Marian going 0-for-3 on the power play and Middlebury 1-for-3.
  • The Panthers held a 34-26 advantage in face-offs.
  • This was the first meeting between the two schools.
