Fond du Lac Board of Education Approves Two Administrative Hires

The Fond du Lac School District (FDL-SD) announces Thomas Triller’s promotion to 6-12 English Language Arts Coordinator. Currently a German Teacher at Fond du Lac High School and STEM Academy, Mr. Triller will join the district’s administrative team on July 1, 2024, succeeding Lauren Sullivan.

Mr. Triller’s rich educational background showcases his leadership in language education, extending beyond his teaching role at FDL-SD. He held positions such as Secondary Assistant Principal at Strothoff International School (Dreieich, Germany), Director of Teaching and Learning and Vice-Principal of Secondary School at the International School of Tanganyika (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania). He has also taught in various international and local schools across Lima, Peru; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Kinshasa, DR Congo; Wisconsin Heights; Jurmala, Latvia; St. John’s Northwest Military Academies in Delafield; Jena, Germany; and DeForest.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a certification in Secondary Education-Broad Field Social Studies from Carroll University (Waukesha, WI), a Master’s Degree in Modern German Literature and Teaching German as a Foreign Language from the University of Hagen (Hagen, Germany) and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Concordia University (Mequon, WI).

Mr. Triller is the first product of the FDL-SD Administrator Hiring Pool, where applicants receive feedback after internal interviews. Based on their performance, candidates either move forward in the pool for future opportunities or are advised on areas for improvement. The pool’s creation is part of the district’s strategic approach to leadership development and succession planning.

“Thomas’s background in language education matches our vision perfectly,” said Dr. Jeff Fleig, Superintendent. “His rich educational and professional experiences reflect his expertise and dedication. With his qualifications and active involvement in the educational community, he is an ideal addition to our Teaching and Learning team. Thomas will enhance our students’ growth and success.”

Mr. Triller is actively involved in the International Baccalaureate (IB) community and church leadership. He has been recognized with several honors and scholarships, including a Fulbright Scholarship, and has contributed to educational publications, highlighting his commitment to enhancing educational resources.

Mr. Triller’s administrative experience, his expertise in language instruction and his work with advanced placement (AP) and IB programs make him an ideal candidate for the 6-12 English Language Arts Coordinator role.

The Fond du Lac School District (FDL-SD) is excited to welcome Kevin Flegner as the athletic director at Fond du Lac High School (FHS), effective July 1, 2024

Mr. Flegner brings a wealth of experience and a rich background in athletic administration. Over the past six years, he transformed the athletic program at Oconomowoc, transitioning it from the now-defunct Wisconsin Little Ten Conference to the Classic Eight Conference. Before his time at Oconomowoc, Flegner served as Arrowhead’s activities director, overseeing one of Wisconsin’s most impressive periods in high school athletics from 2008-2016. His leadership at Arrowhead contributed to the school winning 24 WIAA state championships across 12 sports, along with numerous achievements in downhill skiing, lacrosse, field hockey and other co-curricular activities.

“I am very excited and humbled for the opportunity,” said Flegner. “I would like to thank Dr. Fleig and the Board of Education for the trust as the next athletic leader. Fond du Lac is a supportive community and boasts a strong athletic tradition. I am eager to support our student-athletes, mentor our coaches and foster positive ties with our community and alumni. Go Cardinals!”

Mr. Flegner, succeeding interim athletic director Jim Smasal after Mr. Arik Gunderson’s move to Columbus principal, has a proven track record of enhancing programs and communities. He started his career in education at Montello as a fourth-grade and at-risk teacher, assistant athletic director, head boys’ basketball coach and assistant football coach. He later began his full-time athletic director career at Fort Atkinson.

In addition to his administrative accomplishments, Mr. Flegner had a notable athletic career, as Randolph’s all-time leading scorer in boys’ basketball and played at Northeastern Illinois and Sioux Falls universities. At Sioux Falls, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, is a Certified Athletic Administrator by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, and holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Marian University. He actively contributes to the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

“Mr. Flegner brings a tremendous amount of experience in not only leading but positively transforming athletic programs all across the state,” said Dr. Jeffrey Fleig, FDL-SD Superintendent. “We are pleased to introduce Mr. Flegner as our next FHS Athletic Director, confident that our co-curricular experience will flourish under his leadership.”

We invite the We Are Fondy community to welcome Mr. Kevin Flegner warmly. As Cardinals, we eagerly anticipate his positive impact on both our high school and the broader community.
