First-half lead evaporates in Sabre men’s basketball loss

Marian University men’s basketball (7-5, 4-2 NACC) carried a five-point lead into halftime before St. Norbert’s 40-point second half handed the Sabres a 66-59 loss.

  • Marian jumped out to an early 11-0 lead, with senior Derek Lindert scoring the first five Sabre points.
  • Junior Andrew Ayeni found himself in early foul trouble, as the Sabres committed 18 fouls on the night, their second-highest total of the season.
  • Freshman Marvin Haslett provided an immediate spark off the bench, leading the Sabres with nine first-half points. Haslett went coast-to-coast for a layup with 6:35 left in the half to give the Sabres an 11-point lead, their largest of the game.
  • The Green Knights found momentum to end the half, scoring 17 points in the final six minutes to narrow the Sabres’ lead to five at halftime, 31-26.
  • St. Norbert opened the second half with an 8-0 run, giving them their first lead of the night.
  • Marian responded with a flurry of three-pointers from Haslett and Lindert to reclaim the lead.
  • Lindert’s fourth three-pointer gave Marian a 44-38 lead with 12 and a half minutes remaining.
  • A 13-2 Green Knight run put St. Norbert back in front by five with 8:30 left.
  • Marian went six and a half minutes without a field goal until an Ayeni layup cut St. Norbert’s lead to 11, halting a 25-6 Green Knights run.
  • Ayeni scored the last nine Sabre points, while helping limit the Green Knights to one field goal in the final five minutes, but Marian couldn’t complete the comeback. St. Norbert held on for a 66-59 win.

  • With four three-pointers tonight, Lindert remains second in the NACC in three-point field goals, trailing only Frank Paszkowski of Dominican.
  • The Sabres shot 9-of-24 (.375) in the second half after going 13-of-26 (.500) first.
  • Both teams were evened with 28 points in the paint, despite the Sabres trailing 18-4 in that category in the first half.
  • Haslett has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games, with four of those coming off the bench.
  • Tonight was the 16th all-time meeting between the Sabres and Green Knights, with St. Norbert leading the series 11-5.
  • Marian has lost five of the last six meetings against St. Norbert, with their only win in the span being a 63-60 victory on Feb. 17, 2024, at Sadoff Gymnasium.
