Fast start not enough for Sabre women’s volleyball

Marian University women’s volleyball (1-11, 0-0 NACC) had a fast start but fell to Ripon 21-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-23.

  • Marian jumped out to a commanding 12-5 lead to open the match.
  • Ripon was able to cut that deficit down to three on two occasions but Marian was able to hold off the come back.
  • The second set began much tighter with Ripon leading 10-9.
  • The Sabres then used a 6-1 run to build a four-point lead.
  • Another spurt, six of nine points, from the Sabres later in the set saw Marian lead 21-17.
  • The Sabres were able to bring that lead out to 23-21, but Ripon responded scoring four straight points to even the sets.
  • Using that momentum, Ripon was able to start out with a 14-5 lead in the third set and cruised to the win.
  • Similarly in the fourth, the Red Hawks scored the first six points and managed to lead 16-6.
  • Marian rallied, however, scoring 10 of the next 14 points to only trail 20-16.
  • The Red Hawks maintained its lead and found themselves at match point at 24-19.
  • Marian made things interesting scoring four straight, but the Red Hawks were able to hold off a fifth set.

  • Marian led in kills by a 48-43 margin, but Ripon finished ahead in digs at a 73-61 clip.
  • The Red Hawks held advantages of 8-1 in service aces and 10-3 in blocks.
  • Marian had at least 14 kills in three of the four sets.
  • The Sabres are now 18-33 all-time against Ripon.

Senior Harley Bartels paced the Sabres with 13 kills and two blocks.
Senior Alana McDermott reached 1,000 digs as a Sabre with a 21-dig performance.
Junior Kylie Krueger had 10 kills to go with seven digs.
