Fast start helps Marian women’s soccer surpass Benedictine

Marian University women’s soccer (7-6-3, 4-4-1 NACC) scored three first-half goals to claim a 4-1 rout over Benedictine.

  • The Sabres opened up the scoring in the 19th minute with a goal from junior Ysabella Sanchez.
  • Senior Brianna Guelig continued her strong season with a score at 26:04 to extend the lead to two.
  • Junior Ana Gonzalez scored the first goal of her Sabre career in the 35th minute to help Marian lead 3-0 going into the break.
  • Junior Emily Gordillo broke open the second half with her sixth goal of the season to give the Sabres a commanding 4-0 lead. 
  • Benedictine’s Kailyn Knudson scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute, but it wasn’t enough as the Sabres left with a 4-1 victory.

  • The Sabres led the Eagles in shots with a 13-6 advantage, including 8-5 in shots on goal.
  • Both teams were limited in corner kicks with one each. Marian recorded zero corner kicks in the first half. 
  • The teams were also even in saves, with four on each side.
  • The Sabres have now matched their win total from 2024 with seven wins. They also matched their conference win total from last season with four. 
  • The win moved the all-time series to 13-8-2 against the Eagles.
  • Marian has not lost at Benedictine since 2016.

Senior Chelsea King (3-5-3) recorded four saves on the day. 
Junior Emily Gordillo scored the lone goal of the second half for the Sabres and had a team-high three shots.
