Early lead slips as Marian men’s soccer falls to Benedictine

Marian University men’s soccer (4-9-2, 2-6-1 NACC) held a lead in the second half, but a late comeback saw Benedictine prevail, 2-1.

  • Benedictine nearly took an early lead, with Ari Hernandez hitting the left woodwork in the 14th minute.
  • Marian started out hot, putting up seven shots in the first 25 minutes, including a shot on goal from freshman Jack Williams.
  • The second half began with senior Owen Holevas scoring to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.
  • In the 65th minute, Jack Breunig of Benedictine scored the equalizer off an assist from Carter Bolberg.
  • 12 minutes later, the Eagles took the lead with a score from Dawid Molek. Two assists on the play went to Alex Krzos and Boberg. 
  • Williams had a shot on goal in the 89th minute, but an offsides penalty at 89:52 put an end to Marian’s comeback hopes.

  • The Eagles also led in corner kicks with a 9-4 lead.
  • The Sabres totaled 11 fouls on the night and three yellow cards.
  • The loss dropped the all-time series to 5-15-1 with the Eagles. 
  • Marian has dropped 14 of the previous 16 match ups against the Eagles, with their last win coming last year; a 3-0 victory at Smith Field.

Senior Owen Holevas scored the first goal of his Sabre career to give Marian a lead to start the second half. 
Junior Tyler Hall (4-9-2) had four saves and helped hold the Eagles scoreless in the first half. 
Freshman Jack Williams led the Sabres in shots (3) and shots on goal (2) while playing all 90 minutes.
