Defense falters late for Sabre women’s hoops at Aurora

Marian University women’s basketball (3-4, 1-1 NACC) had a three-game win streak snapped by Aurora falling to the Spartans 98-71.

  • Marian held the largest lead of the first quarter at 14-9 after a triple from senior Lexi Brakebush.
  • Aurora had a strong finish over the final 4:11 of the quarter using a 14-4 spurt to lead by five before a jumper from senior McKayla Goebel put the score at 23-20 after 10 minutes.
  • The Spartans were able to take control in the second quarter opening the stanza with a 15-8 spurt to lead 38-28.
  • Marian was able to cut that deficit in half with 3:25 to play until halftime but Aurora scored the final 11 points to lead 49-33 at the break.
  • Aurora maintained a 15-point lead before the Sabres scored 10 straight points to only trail 53-48 with 4:11 on the clock.
  • Marian was able to trim the deficit to as little as three on two occasions but Aurora took a 62-57 lead into the final quarter.
  • A strong start to the final 10 minutes for Aurora saw the Spartans open with an 11-3 run to lead by 13 with 6:21 left.
  • The Spartans held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game with the final settling at 98-71.

  • Aurora finished 35-of-68 (.515) from the field and 13-of-36 (.361) on three-pointers.
  • The Sabres were 16-of-28 (.571) between the first and third quarters.

  • Aurora had 12 offensive rebounds and outscored Marian 19-7 in second-chance points.
  • Marian falls to 3-20 all-time against Aurora with the Spartans taking the last 15 meetings.

Junior Chelsea King finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
Senior Lyla Bartol chipped in 10 points and had five boards to go with four assists.
