Cowden multi-goal game leads Sabre men’s soccer to tie at Lakeland

Marian University men’s soccer (3-8-3, 1-7-3 NACC) tied Lakeland 1-1 in its final road game fo the season.

  • Lakeland was able to get out to a quick start but the Sabres were able to withstand the fast start.
  • Marian was then able to open the scoring in the 31st minute when senior Drew Cowden scored with an assist from senior Giuliano Corazzina.
  • The lead wouldn’t last that long as Lakeland was able to find an equalizer in the 40th minute.
  • The 1-1 stalemate would hold going into the break of action.
  • The Sabres were able to get out to a quick start in the second half with Cowden scoring just 8:30 into the second stanza.  Senior Logan Holevas earned an assist on the goal.
  • One again, however, Lakeland had an answer scoring just 2:24 later to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Cowden nearly completed a hat trick at teh 79:42 mark but a defensive save kept the game at a deadlock.
  • Neither team managed many shots in the final 10 minutes leading to a 2-2 draw.

  • Marian held a 20-11 edge in shots with a 10-8 advantage for shots on goal.
  • Lakeland held a slim margin in corner kicks at 8-7.
  • This is just the fourth tie in the all-time series between Marian and Lakeland.

Senior Drew Cowden had his first multi-goal game of the season.  He has now scored three goals in the last three games.
Freshman Gijs Koopmans (0-1-1) made six saves in the first start of his career.
Senior Logan Holevas had his second assist of the season.
