Christofferson shines in Sabre softball split

Marian University softball (18-18, 15-9 NACC) split its penultimate regular season doubleheader with Lakeland, winning 3-2 in game one before dropping game two, 6-3.

GAME 1 

  • The Sabres totaled three hits and loaded the bases in the third but came away empty. 
  • Lakeland broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth.
  • Marian finally plated a run in the sixth with junior Mackenzie Christofferson reaching on an error following her double to start the inning. 
  • The seventh proved pivotal for the Sabres, as they scored two runs on four hits, with senior Carissa Heisdorf and junior Savanna Knuth each driving in a run. 
  • Lakeland put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh and advanced one to third, but Marian held on for the 3-2 win. 

GAME 2 

  • Lawrence built a quick 2-0 lead over the first three innings, as Marian was held hitless until the fourth. 
  • Marian tied it in the fifth, as a double from sophomore Aubrey Bender set up two runs scored by Heisdorf and Christofferson. 
  • The Sabres took the lead in the next inning, as a double by junior Erin Cowe led to a run. 
  • Two errors in the bottom of the sixth allowed Lakeland to claw back with three runs, including one on a triple, as they turned a deficit into a 6-3 lead. 
  • Marian left two on base in the seventh but went hitless in the final inning.

GAME 1

  • The Sabres outhit the Muskies, 14-10.
  • Lakeland committed one miscue, while the Sabres were error-free.
  • Junior Sabrina Di Vito pitched a complete game, picking up her seventh win.
  • Christofferson notched her 10th game of the season with double-digit putouts. 

GAME 2

  • Lakeland outhit the Sabres 8-6. 
  • Marian committed a season-high five errors, which proved costly.
  • Marian sits sixth in the NACC standings with two regular-season games remaining.
  • The Sabres trail the all-time series 49-44 against the Muskies but have won three of the last five meetings.

Sophomore Aubrey Bender finished 4-for-7 with two runs batted in.
Junior Savanna Knuth struck out five batters in game two.
