Cherkowski, Fortner named CSC Academic All-District honorees

Senior Nicholas Cherkowski and junior Daunte Fortner of Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey have each earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) All-District squad.

The CSC Academic All-American program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their efforts both in competition and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must compete in 90 percent of their team’s games, be a key starter or reserve on their team, and attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5. They must also hold at least sophomore standing at their institution.

Cherkowski (Vernon, B.C.) was the top scorer for the Sabres scoring nine goals to go wtih 12 assists for 21 points. Serving as the team captain, Cherkowski had at least one point in 14 games with five multi-point performances. One of his best games came in the opener against Concordia College where he scored a goal to go with three assists for four points. He would add a helper in the finale of the series to earn an NCHA Star of the Week selection. Cherkowski was especially effective on special teams where he scored three power-play goals to go with on short-handed score. He netted one game-winner which came against Dubuque in the consolation game of the Superior Showdown.

Fortner (Kingsford, Mich.) led Marian with 13 assists on the campaign and scored four times for 17 total points. He would record a point in 12 games during the season and posted multiple points in five games. In four of those performances, he had multiple assists. Fortner closed out the first half of the season with three points in a series against Concordia College. That momentum carried into the second half where he would record seven points over the next six games with two of his multi-point performances. In total, that eight game stretch saw him score one goal with nine assists for 10 total points. In the face-off circle, Fortner won 156 draws and had a .534 win percentage.
