Ayeni and Vassilakis lead Marian men’s basketball past Dominican

Senior Alex Vassilakis and junior Andrew Ayeni combined for 33 points and 21 rebounds as Marian University men’s basketball (8-5, 5-2 NACC) used a big second half to pull away from Dominican, 72-45.

  • Dominican struck first, jumping out to a quick 12-6 lead as Marian started the game shooting 2-of-9 from the floor. 
  • Three three-pointers, including two from freshman Marvin Haslett, gave Marian a spark, putting them ahead 17-16 midway through the first half. 
  • Haslett continued his success, finishing the half with 11 points and showcasing his versatile skillset. 
  • The Stars took a brief two-point lead before senior Jazz Orozco’s layup evened the score at 30-30 heading into halftime. 
  • Marian completely flipped the game in the second half, opening with a 15-3 run to push their lead into double figures. Vassilakis scored seven of those points and contributed across the stat sheet. 
  • A 12-0 spurt of three-pointers, including Haslett’s fourth of the game, pushed Marian ahead by 22. 
  • Freshman JT Schmitt scored the first points of his Marian career on a paint jumper, extending the Sabres’ lead to 27, their biggest of the game.

Senior Alex Vassilakis notched his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  
Freshman Marvin Haslett scored a game-high 19 points.
