For the past seven years, Norma Smit has been a dedicated volunteer with SSM Health at Home Hospice in Green Lake. Her journey began as a companionship volunteer, offering comfort and connection to patients.
However, like many, her role was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. When restrictions lifted, Norma embraced a new opportunity – becoming the Monday bingo caller at the Markesan Barrett House in January 2022.
Norma’s inspiration for this role came from a fond memory. “I recall a time when I was visiting a gentleman at the Barrett House for companionship,” Norma shares. “He used to play bingo all the time and had such a fun time doing it! He would make the experience fun for the other residents.” That joyful memory made it easy for her to step into the role with enthusiasm.
When asked what she finds most fulfilling about volunteering, Norma says, “I had a good life growing up, so I feel the need to give back.” Her upbringing with older parents also helps her connect more easily with the residents. And there’s a lighter side too – “I really like the music they play here!” she adds with a smile.
One of Norma’s most cherished memories involves a bit of creativity and humor. She uses a back scratcher as a pointer while calling bingo, a playful tool that helps keep residents engaged.
“It helps ease the patients in a fun way,” she explains. The humor and camaraderie among the residents bring her joy. “Some of the residents talk back with appropriate sarcasm and it makes me laugh,” she said with a chuckle. “With the number of different residents at the Barrett House, there is always something new!”
Norma encourages others to consider volunteering with SSM Health at Home Hospice. Her advice? “Go for it and go with an open mind! There are days that are harder than others, but overall, you will love it!”
There are many wonderful opportunities for those interested in volunteering with SSM Health at Home Hospice, including providing companionship and emotional support, veteran recognition, pet therapy, assisting with spiritual care and serving meals at the Hospice Home of Hope, and other patient and non-patient contact opportunities.
SSM Health at Home Hospice provides an individualized training program designed to equip volunteers for the varied types of service. Hospice in Fond du Lac and Green Lake areas are currently looking for more volunteers who are placed in their own geographic areas.
Being a hospice volunteer is a rewarding experience that allows individuals to share their gifts and talents, grow spiritually, learn new skills, belong to a caring team with a common goal, and much more.
