Jimmy McDermott has been announced as an assistant coach for the Marian University NCAA men’s hockey program.
“We are very excited to add Coach McDermott to our staff,” said Head NCAA Men’s Hockey Coach Clay Van Diest. “He comes from a championship program both as a student-athlete and a coach, and we are excited to add that to our culture here at Marian.”
McDermott joins Marian after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Assumption University, his alma mater. While as an assistant, the Greyhounds went a combined 36-27-2. The Greyhounds went 23-8-2 last season with a 15-3-2 mark in Northeast 10 play earning Assumption the regular season championship. Assumption then went on to defeat Post and Saint Anselm to earn the program its second tournament championship in three seasons. McDermott helped coordinate game strategy during this time and aided in the coaching of six all-conference student-athletes, an All-American, and all of the major NE10 award winners in 2026.
During his playing career with the Greyhounds, McDermott skated in 57 games over three seasons scoring seven goals with nine assists for 16 total points. In his senior season he helped guide Assumption to a 25-7-0 record with a 16-4-0 NE10 mark to lead the Greyhounds to a conference championship. The Greyhounds also went on to defeat Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire in double overtime to win the conference tournament. McDermott skated in 25 games that season scoring three of his goals and recording six of his assists. Prior to his time at Assumption, McDermott spent one season at Saint Mary’s (Minn.).
“I’m extremely excited and grateful to join the Marian NCAA hockey program,” said McDermott. “I’m excited to be a part of a group committed to building a strong foundation for success. I look forward to helping establish a winning culture and continuing to push the program forward.”
He has also spent time as a skating coach with Jon Dillon’s Explosive Power Skating and a youth coach with the Dubuque Saints. McDermott helped mentor young athletes with both organizations by designing drills and enhancing on-ice skills. He also helped promote skill development and engagement during this time.
McDermott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Assumption in 2023.
