On Saturday, May 5, over 65 lemonade stands will be open for business across Fond du Lac and Dodge counties as part of Lemonade Day. Young entrepreneurs will set up shop around the communities of Fond du Lac, North Fond du Lac, Brownsville, Lomira, Campbellsport and Eden.
Community members are encouraged to visit any of the stands from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A map of Lemonade Day stand locations is available at www.lemonadeday.org/fond-du-lac-area.
Fond du Lac Area Lemonade Day is a community-wide educational initiative of Envision Greater Fond du Lac designed to teach kids in grades 4-6 how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand. Lemonade teaches children the entrepreneurial skills necessary to be successful in the future and become contributing members of their communities. They learn how to create a budget, set profit-making goals, serve customers, repay investors and give back to the community. They are encouraged to spend some of their profit as a reward for their hard work, save some of their profit for a rainy day or re-invest in their business, and share some of their profit with the community that supported them.
“It is truly heartwarming to see the businesses, schools and families come together to cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit of our next generation,” said Scott Powell, vice president of economic development at Envision greater Fond du Lac. “It is vitally important that we expose our children to the value of entrepreneurship and how important businesses are to the overall wellbeing of a community.”
The May 5 event is the culmination of weeks of learning and hard work. Leading up to the event, students have been mentored through a workbook by a teacher, area business representative or guardian. The students learn many aspects of operating a small business including goal setting, expenses vs. profit, marketing and teamwork. They earn real money and use 100% of their profit to spend, save and share based on their business goals.
